The 2013 Super Bowl was not only a victory for the Baltimore Ravens but also for dogs (especially pit bulls) in the city and across the country as well. Show Your Soft Side an online campaign created in response to the alarming incidence of animal abuse in Baltimore is represented by athletes and celebrity dog and cat lovers throughout the city. Two of the campaign’s most notorious supporters play for the Baltimore Ravens: Wide Receiver Torrey Smith and Line Backer Brendon Ayanbadejo. Both are featured in ads across Baltimore shown with their beloved pets and the slogan “Only a Punk Would Hurt A Cat or Dog.” Show Your Soft Side words directly with the Baltimore’s Mayor’s Anti-Animal Abuse Task force.
According to their website, The Mayor’s Anti-Animal Abuse Task Force was created in July 2009 after a young pit-bull terrier – who was subsequently called Phoenix – was doused with gasoline and set on fire in broad daylight in West Baltimore. On November 3, 2010, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake signed the Anti-Animal Abuse Commission into law with the goal of helping the city prevent and prosecute animal cruelty, including dog fighting.
Torrey Smith is the proud owner of two pit bulls. He joined the Show Your Soft Side team in order to teach the youth of Baltimore that “real men” are not cruel to animals. Thanks in part to his rise to stardom in the NFL, the campaign has become recognized across the country. To date, they have over 21,000 fans following their Face book page. We salute Torrey and Brendon’s dedication to ending animal abuse and educating our youth.
